Games: What games are you currently playing? [OT!]

@ Cynical: i dunno, that's a very negative way to percieve games. im not contradicting you or anything. games, to a degree, are really a waste of many hours during which you could be doing many other more productive things, however they are very similar to books in that they provide a means of escapism primarily. that is the main appeal. games allow you to temporarily liberate yourself from whatever issues/pressures you may be suffering in your life, and just get into a decent game (provided that it's enthralling enough).

you could argue that games are "bad for you", but firstly there is little evidence to support this, aside from the occasional american twat who plays so much they lose all association with reality and develop schizophrenia, and secondly, if taken into consideration and not done to excess, games dont have a bad influence at all.
and the same issue can apply to books, for although they may be percieved as more "mentally stimulating than games (which is usually true), really good books can be difficult to come by, and even if someone reads to excess, then it can have a negative influence on the person's physical/mental state. if anything, reading too many books can reduce any means of maintaining a social life (like some people i know in college), while many games can promote social behaviour (i.e. 2 newly introduced guys who share a common interest in the game halo).

but yeah, games dont appeal to everyone, and it doesnt need to anyway. it's just given far too many negative connotations by society and other such people.

I don't think so; but in that case I'd want to have more time to waste on them. What's better than exploting an otherwise dead time?


Besides, if you want a deep story, just find a good book.

No book I ever read was half as good as Xenogears, and I'm being optimistic on the books. Not to mention that I want to see, hear, and play, besides read.

yeah, that's another great advantage with games, the interactivity involved with the story in question (especially with RPGs).

I also disagree, without Halo you would not have great stories like RedVsBlue. Books are nice, since not everything can be in games, along with movies, since they take less time than books. So each have their ups and downs.

Yeah, its games which also provide the most artistic variation, combining the qualities of all the other entertainment mediums, such as direction, scripting, musical composition and art, whilst adding actual gameplay mechanic to tie it all together.
If you happen to have a high level of quality in each of those artistic foundations, and tie it together with well designed gameplay, then you have a title that people will remember forever, like any novel, movie or album.

I don't think so; first it starts with the same old myth about the first humans in the garden of eden, then it goes with a few gory jew stories involving some god that must have been a son of a bitch ("PK your son cos I'm the GM and I demand you to | lol man I was kidding ha ha" type things); then shit happens, then somebody dies, and that's the old testament; the new testament is less brutal but still; Jebus born, is good, gets killed for being good (that's the morals of the story?), gory details on his crucifixion and later ascension, most of which are all invented and were added and edited hundreds of years afterwards, and it's all an invention of the church to control the lambs. For example, the fact that John wrote it, that he ascended, Mary (who was most certainly not a virgin) ascended in body and soul, Jebus was gawd himself, etc. were all inventions of several priests and Constantine, centuries after it happened. Oh and nobody buys magic, no matter if you're super-spiritual Jebus the savior or nonviolent all loving Dalai Lama?.
